Signatures is a work for solo harp consisting of five short movements, inspired by the keyboard sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti. Each movement explores a distinct character, reflecting the compact and highly individual nature of Scarlatti’s sonatas.
The work draws particularly on their rhythmic vitality, lyricism and contrapuntal writing, as well as Scarlatti’s distinctive use of articulation. These elements are reinterpreted within a personal musical language rather than directly imitating his style.
Like a signature that can suggest a personality in only a few strokes, each of the five movements seeks to establish its own identity through a concise musical gesture—giving the work its title, Signatures.
